Scholarship Winner Update

Leonard Barrow and Paul Brown, members of the SAVCO Scholarship Committee, have lunch with Sofia Zimmerman.

As you might have gathered, this year (2023 - 2024) has been extremely busy and equally rewarding. Even through the tough times, I have loved every minute at ASU. I am so incredibly fortunate that I have been able to soak up everything ASU has to offer without having to stress about student loans and paying for school. I have seen people close to me work more than two jobs while being in college to pay for school and it constantly reminds me how truly lucky I am. Sedona Red Rock High School is very fortunate to have so many generous scholarships programs like SAVCO. These scholarships really do make all the difference for people like me that came from a low income household. Thanks to your generous contribution, I have not had to put the burden of financing college on my parents or myself.

With best regards,

Sofia Zimmerman, 2021 SAVCO Scholarship Recipient

This past year was a bit different for me! During Fall semester, I took 2 Computer science courses, alongside 2 Russian courses and 2 Biology courses. I was also a teaching assistant in the Computer Science department. This last semester I decided to change things up. I was hired to be a research assistant with the professor of cyber-security. This summer, I’m staying in Tucson and continuing my job as a Research Assistant. While I originally chose Computer Science and Russian to be my majors simply because I found them interesting, it seems they are coming together in the field of cyber security! Thank you to the Marine Corps League/SAVCO for all of your support. I can’t believe I only have one year left!

Best Regards,

Hi there! My name is Chloe Coulter, and I am a future junior studying Biomedical Science at the Barrett Honors College at ASU. This year I have successfully completed 31 credits of both pre-med and honors courses for my degree. I am an active member of the Rotaract Club, American Medical Women’s Association, Barrett Leadership and Service Team, and am now the acting President of the ASU American Red Cross Chapter. I have completed roughly 50 hours of community service doing such things as coordinating blood drives and packaging meals for Feed my Starving Children. My favorite event this year took place in honor of Veteran’s Day, where we placed over 100 American flags along the border of Tempe Town Lake. I hope to study abroad next spring. Your scholarship means the world to me, and I truly believe that without your aid and support, I wouldn’t be on my journey towards academic excellence, personal growth and a future where I cannot wait to serve my community.

With Best Regards,
Chloe Coulter, 2020 Marine Corps League Recipient
