National Purple Heart Day

August 7, 2025
National Purple Heart Day is observed annually on August 7th to honor and remember those who have been wounded or killed in action while serving in the U.S. military. It’s a day to reflect on the sacrifices made by service members and express gratitude for their bravery and dedication.

Here’s why this day is significant:
  • Purple Heart Medal:
The Purple Heart is a U.S. military decoration awarded to those wounded or killed by enemy action.

  • Historical Significance:
The award was originally established in 1782 by George Washington as the “Badge of Military Merit”. It was revived in 1932 and has been awarded to over 1.8 million service members since its creation.

  • Honoring Sacrifice:
National Purple Heart Day is a time to acknowledge the profound sacrifices made by service members and their families.

  • Community Recognition:
Many communities and organizations hold ceremonies, light up buildings in purple, and organize events to honor Purple Heart recipients.
